Truth, coming out soon...

Well, closer to the truth than some other books. Can the world wait?

Meantime, sitting in my black hole at the end of the universe, I am working on a big one now, with the 100,000 words that has been requested rather than the novella length that is apparently of "limited appeal". They want 100,000 words of nonsense rather than between 17,000 and 35,000? Makes no sense to me, but then nonsense never does. Okay, "they" are the bosses, but it will take some time. Can I use some of the same words more than once? Oh. Good. I'll need to sit in this hole for quite a while though, but I'll pop out occasionally to take in the view and study the nonsense all around me that inspires the nonsense deep within me, that is now getting written down... That, and re-reading Gormenghast for shameless assistance, will keep me busy. 1000 words today, and very stupid words too, if I may say so. Very stupid indeed. I am pleased.

Well done! I hope you remember us little people when you're rich and famous!

The caveat for 100k words doesn't indicate another chemistry book in the works unless, of course, you're writing a thesis. Since my guess is you've had enough of all that I will wish you well in the successful completion of a well titled novel.

Well done :-)

As to the extra amount of words... that is publishing houses for you, they like a particular formula (a conversation I had with two people in publishing a few years ago was enlightening). The readers just like an interesting and engaging book :-)

Chemistry books Susan? Yes, all done with them I think. More little quirky sciencey books maybe. Longer novel, if and when completed, nothing being certain in this world, has no title yet (The Report on Sample 717 is a novella of about 33K publishing in a few weeks). Cherie - I agree with what I think you are saying so much. I think the reading world is changing anyway, especially with digital publishing and so much more Indie or part-Indie publishing. I have used all three systems - traditional publishing houses (with and without an agent), Independent and loose editorial policy small publisher. People telling you what works have had too much power. At the moment I do have a (welcome) traditional voice pointing me along the big long traditional route, but... I switch and change my direction several times each day. Increasingly, I just think I should do what I want and care not a jot about anything else, just as long as I write some rubbish each day to keep me happily insane. Thanks for the comments everybody, including the emails from the shy people ;)
